IF you told people the plot was about a forgotten child who was continuously trying to kill two burglars, no one would ever think it was a Christmas film.

But Home Alone has just been named Britain’s favourite Christmas movie of all time in a new survey - and banked $285.8million in the US and Canada alone after it was released in 1990.

It launched the career of then-unknown star Macaulay Culkin - and helped his co-stars land major subsequent roles.

The movie's success led to a sequel starring Macaulay in the lead, with the cast from the first movie also reprising their roles - and they're played every Christmas on TV.

There have been four follow-up Home Alone movies - albeit less successful - with different actors.

It's been well over three decades since the original came out, so let's see what the cast is up to these days.

MACAULAY CULKIN

After Home Alone's success, then 10-year-old Macaulay was one of the most sought after actors.

He landed roles in films including My Girl, The Good Son, The Pagemaster, Richie Rich, and even found himself working with Michael Jackson.

At the age of 15, Macaulay took the explosive step to formally emancipate himself by removing his mum and dad as his legal guardians.

It was reported the teen wanted to keep his hands solely on the £13million fortune he'd amassed from his movie stardom and stop his parents from controlling his cash in future.

He married Rachel Miner at age 18 in 1998, though they separated in 2000, divorcing two years later, and work appeared to dry up.

He started dating Mila Kunis and was with her for eight years in a romance they kept private.

In 2004, 24-year-old Macaulay was charged with possessing marijuana and a controlled substance without a prescription after his car was searched by police in Oklahoma.

As rumours swirled about his drug habit, snaps of Macaulay looking gaunt and frail and clutching an energy drink shocked fans in 2012.

He was in the spotlight again in 2017 when he started dating Disney actress Brenda Song - and the couple welcomed son Dakota in April 2021.

They got engaged in January this year, with Macaulay proposing with a ring experts estimated to be worth $500,000.

He previously admitted he likes to be a recluse over the Christmas period due to Home Alone's annual surge in popularity.

CATHERINE O'HARA

The seasoned actress wasn't exactly an unknown before appearing in Home Alone, as she'd already had roles in numerous films including Beetlejuice.

Plenty more roles came soon after including in Wyatt Earp, Best in Show, Orange County, and A Mighty Wind.

Catherine landed a role as Moira Rose in the critically acclaimed series Schitt's Creek, which ended up winning her an Emmy for outstanding lead actress.

She has been married to Bo Welch since 1992 and they share two kids.

Catherine, now 68, was spotted running errands in the Los Angeles area last week, making room for holiday presents in their home as they moved some of their possessions into a storage unit.

JOE PESCI

The iconic actor's comedic turn as Harry in Home Alone came as a shock to many as just two months earlier he had played the vicious and violent Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas - which landed him an Oscar.

However, Joe would try his hand again at comedy with My Cousin Vinny, Lethal Weapon 3, and the Home Alone sequel before returning to his roots with Casino.

The star dropped out of the spotlight for some time before making quite the return in Martin Scorsese's 2019 film The Irishman, a role that got him an Oscar nomination.

And in 2020, he was warring with his Jersey Shore neighbors over plans to extend private boat docks in his exclusive waterfront enclave.

Joe, 79, shares one child with his ex-wife Claudia Haro.

DANIEL STERN

Daniel, now 65, has quite the lengthy Hollywood resume, which includes being the narrator of The Wonder Years series until 1993.

After Home Alone, he landed plenty of roles on the big and small screen, with pit stops on Hey Arnold! Family Guy, Workaholics, and Angie Tribeca.

Most recently he has a regular role on Saturday Night Live comic Aidy Bryant's series Shrill.

Director and long-term friend Martin Scorsese also managed to persuade the actor to appear in 2019's critically-acclaimed The Irishman which aired on Netflix. He has a project — 'For All Mankind' — coming out in 2023.

Daniel shares three kids with wife Laure Mattos and appears to enjoy spending time on his large Southern California farm and vineyard.

He was recently seen taking a long walk on a nearby country road in a grey tracksuit, the same shade as his beard.

KIERAN CULKIN

While Macaulay's younger brother had his first role in Home Alone, he's arguably better known for his more recent stints on screen.

He appeared in Father of the Bride and its sequel, She's All That, The Cider House Rules, and Iggy Goes Down.

Since 2018, Kieran has starred as Roman Roy in HBO's Succession, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.

Kieran, 40, has been happily married to his wife Jazz Charlton since June 8, 2013.

They have two children - daughter Kinsey Sioux, born September 13, 2019 and son Wilder Wolf, born August 17, 2021.

JOHN HEARD

John Heard played Kevin’s dad Peter McCallister - but in his personal life, things were difficult, with the star locked in a bitter custody battle over his son Jack with the actress Melissa Leo.

Throughout the Nineties John faced a number of offences and was found guilty of trespassing at his ex’s home in Baltimore in 1997.

He was also charged with third-degree assault after allegedly slapping Melissa, as well as stalking her and their son and allegedly beating up her new partner.

“I fear for the safety of my son and my safety,” Melissa told People magazine.

John and his second wife Sharon had two children together, Max and Annika, but in 2017 they were devastated when their son died.

In an obituary, Sharon said Max “died peacefully in his sleep” and was “in deep grief” due to allegedly “not having a father participating in his life”.

Six months later, John was found dead in a hotel room by a maid at the age of 71 after he suffered a fatal heart attack.

DEVIN RATRAY

While he will always be known for playing Buzz on Home Alone, Devin has continued to snag roles in everything from The Prince and Me to Hustlers.

He also reprised his classic role in 2021's Home Sweet Home Alone.

But Devin has been plagued by scandal in recent years.

Last year, he was accused of drugging and raping his female friend in his apartment - allegations he strongly denies.

Lisa Smith alleges the attack happened in New York in September 2017, claiming she was drugged and remembers waking up unable to move.

Cops reportedly told her the case was closed. It came months after Devin was accused of trying to strangle his ex-girlfriend.

He was charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation before being released on a $25,000 bond. Devin pleaded not guilty and stood trial in October.

JOHN CANDY

Comedy legend John Candy had a brief role in Home Alone, playing cab driver Gus Polinski.

The actor sadly died four years after the movie was released, while he was filming wild west comedy Wagons East.

After wrapping his last scene, he cooked a celebratory meal for his assistants and was found dead in his bed the next day at the age of 43.

John’s premature death was the result of a heart attack; throughout his life he battled weight issues, was a heavy drinker and smoked a packet of cigarettes a day.

It was claimed he became addicted to cocaine during his time as a Hollywood star.

HILLARY WOLF

Hillary Wolf played Kevin's catty older sister Megan and hasn't acted since Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

After retiring from acting aged 15 she became an Olympian, representing the United States for Judo in 1996 and 2000.

Now 46, she is a married full-time mother to two sons and a published author of The Not So Zen Mom.

MICHAEL C. MARONNA

Another of Kevin's horrible siblings, Jeff famously called him "a disease".

Played by Mike C. Maronna, the 44-year-old now works behind the camera as a lighting technician on films, which has included Sex and the City and Be Kind, Rewind.

He also appeared in the music videos for bands Nada Surf and The XYZ Affair.

Since 2013, Mike co-hosts the podcast The Adventures of Danny and Mike with his Adventures of Pete and Pete co-star Danny Tamberelli.

ANGELA GOETHALS

Angela Goethals, also 44, played Kevin's older sister Linnie - the girl behind the infamous Les Incompetents scene.

She went on to star in Jerry Maguire (1996), Spanglish (2004), and shows like Grey's Anatomy, CSI, and 24.

She married fellow actor Russel Soder in 2005 and the couple have one child together.

'BUZZ'S GIRLFRIEND'

There's a famous part in Home Alone where Kevin picks up a picture of his bully brother Buzz's girlfriend and comments: "Buzz, your girlfriend… WOOF!"

It always seemed cruel on the young girl in the photo - but it turns out Buzz's girlfriend was actually a boy.

Devin explained: "[The producers] decided it would be unkind to put a girl in that role of just being funny-looking. The art director had a son who was more than willing to volunteer for the part.

"I think if he had known it would become the highest-grossing family comedy of all time, he might have had second thoughts about it."

He was recently spotted at a local gas station and smirked at the camera with his same awkward smile and chubby cheeks when asked about his role.
